Abstract

"SLEEP - What goes on in the brain whilst we're not watching ? - or when drugs affect " Our Reality" " ?

Professor Jim Horne from Nottingham University will help us look into:

  • What makes us spend a third of our lives vulnerable to predators?
  • What is going on during sleep that makes it evolutionarily worth that risk?

Certainly people have, from ancient times, had a fascination about what goes on in sleep and it does not seem to be diminishing. Professor Horne will bring us up to date on where the scientific world is currently up to on:

"What sleep is and what it does for us " - "What actually goes on whilst we're asleep" and "What about altered states of consciousness"

  • Do we need to sleep? How much do we need?
  • What are dreams? Do premonitions exist?
  • What about sleepwalking and people who believe they've been abducted by aliens?
  • If drugs can change our view of reality, what does that say about our view of reality under the influence of chemicals normally present in the brain?
  • What is the brain up to when we're not watching?

Knutsford SciBAr consists of ordinary people who meet informally at a cafe/bar-over a beer or wine in Knutsford at 6:30pm on the first Monday in the month. A leading scientist attends and talks for 30 minutes on his topic.

A discussion between attendees and the scientist then follows usually till around 8:30pm. The discussion then continues for days afterwards on line on the SciBAr discussion website http://groups.yahoo.com/group/kscibar until the topic is exhausted and others take over.

(The BA in SciBAr denotes the British Association for the Advancement of Science)

You don't have to join, You don't have to know any science. Just ring and then turn up with an enquiring mind. 6:30pm 1st Monday of the month.
